The Big Savage Tunnel will open April 1st.
It’s been a long winter, but spring is rapidly approaching, even in the highlands of the Allegheny Mountains. That translates to robins returning, turkey vultures sailing on the thermals, skunk cabbage in the wetlands, and most of all, the Big Savage Tunnel, Mile 22 on the Great Allegheny Passage opens.
Doors were added to the tunnel when it was rehabilitated in the early 2000s to keep the interior above freezing and thus prevent ice damage. The days are well above freezing, and the nights are warming, so the tunnel can be opened.
Be careful riding the GAP on the trails approaching the tunnel. They may be a little soft until they thaw and the limestone surface packs.
Enjoy the 2022 cycling season!
